Bridging Beauty and Safety with Bird-Friendly Glass
Building with glass elegantly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing aesthetics and enriching human experiences. While humans can recognize glass as a barrier, birds often cannot, leading to a tragic consequence: researchers estimate that up to a billion birds die each year in the U.S. from glass and building collisions. Glass poses an invisible threat to birds, exacerbated by factors like location, lighting, and landscaping. Birds are an essential part of our natural and built environments, and their well-being is vital. At Hartung, we partner with the best world premier glass manufacturers to provide innovative glass designs that cater to human needs while prioritizing bird collision avoidance. As awareness and demand for bird-friendly glass grow, we are committed to offering solutions that blend aesthetics, safety, and performance seamlessly.Choose bird-friendly glass – because there's a better way to build.

Key Product Features

Prescriptive Method

Following the 2x4 rule, Hartung uses visual markers or patterns on the glass 2” x 4” . This means the patterning must be at two inches or less of horizontal space or four inches or less of vertical space. Hartung can also produce markings at 2”x2” when appropriate

Vision and Aesthetic

Architects can meet bird-safe building requirements without compromising on a building’s aesthetic. Some patterns cover as little as 1% of the surface of the glass, while conforming to the 2x4 rule

The first few stories of a building are a danger zone for bird strikes. Their reflections upon a building’s lowest stories confuse birds, increasing strike incidents in this zone. Hartung provides solutions according with ABC for a Threat Factor of 30 or less.

Whole Product Mandates

As part of a high-quality fenestration design incorporating warm-edge spacers, argon gas-fill and thermally broken frames, Hartung partners with premiere glass suppliers to meet “Whole Product” mandates for every climate zone.
